Four Lawn Fawn Christmas milk carton shaker gift boxes made with Let It Shine Holiday Plaids paper

It’s another day of Lawn Fawn’s Winter 2026 Inspiration and Release Week, and today we’re taking a closer look at the new Let It Shine Holiday Plaids Collection Pack, Tiny Treasures and lots of other festive goodies!

For my second project today, I created a set of four little shaker gift boxes using the Milk Carton die and four of the six beautiful plaid designs from the new Let It Shine Holiday Plaids Collection Pack. I paired each colourway with coordinating shaker elements and one of the adorable mice from the new A Mice Christmas or Sweet Christmas Mice.

The shaker windows are completely clear, so they don’t just add a fun interactive element – they also give you a little peek inside the box. Since the 12×12 papers are double-sided, you can even see the coordinating non-foiled plaid design on the inside. I think these would look especially cute filled with a small gift nestled in some colour-coordinated paper shred!

I’ll show you exactly how I created the clear shaker windows in the Tips & Tricks section below.

The new Winter 2026 products will be available on October 1.

About This Project

For this project, I used four of the six designs from the new Let It Shine Holiday Plaids Collection Pack to create a coordinating set of festive gift boxes with the Milk Carton die. I love how the different colourways work together as a collection while still giving each little box its own character.

I cut a circular opening into the front of each milk carton using Circle Stackables and turned it into a completely clear shaker window. This means the shaker doesn’t just decorate the front of the box – you can actually see straight through it and get a little peek at what’s inside. I’ll explain exactly how I constructed these shaker windows in the Tips & Trickssection below.

I coordinated the shaker filling with each of the plaid designs. The red box is filled with Santa Clay Pieces, the red and green plaid with Christmas Mints Clay Pieces, and the blue box with Snowflake Confetti and a little Chunky Glitter for some extra sparkle. For the neutral plaid, I used tiny gold star confetti from my stash, which worked perfectly with the warm colours and gold foil details of the paper.

On the front of each shaker, I added a white Stitched Scalloped Circle Frame and a little stamped and Copic-coloured mouse, matching the colours of each image to its plaid background. Three of the mice are from the new A Mice Christmas, while the mouse on the neutral box is from Sweet Christmas Mice.

To decorate the top of each milk carton, I added a wooden peg and wrapped it with coordinating Lawn Fawn Hemp Twine – Red for the red box, Denim for the blue one, Coral for the red and green plaid, and Latte for the neutral design. I tied the twine into a bow and used it to secure a little piece of white ribbon from my stash.

For one final festive detail, I threaded two little jingle bells and a tag onto a bulb safety pin. The tag is from Stitched Scalloped Circle Frames and is layered from white and Gold Metallic Cardstock, slightly offset so that the gold peeks out from behind. I gold heat embossed the tiny Have a mice Christmas sentiment from A Mice Christmas onto the white layer, then tucked the finished pin between the bows and the wooden peg.

I think the clear shaker windows make these especially fun as little gift boxes. Once filled, you get a glimpse of the gift or colour-coordinated paper shred through the shaker, while the double-sided paper provides a pretty coordinating plaid on the inside as well.

Tips & Tricks

The shaker windows on these little gift boxes are constructed slightly differently from a traditional shaker card. Instead of adding the shaker on top of the project, the entire shaker sits inside the Milk Carton, leaving a completely clear window that allows you to peek through into the box.

1. Die-cut the window

Before assembling the Milk Carton, I used one of the Circle Stackables to cut a circular opening into the front panel. It is much easier to create the entire shaker while the milk carton is still flat.

2. Add the front acetate

From the inside of the milk carton, I adhered a piece of Acetate behind the circular opening. This creates the clear front of the shaker while keeping the outside of the box completely flat.

3. Build the shaker walls

Next, I used narrow 3D Foam Strips to create a wall around the circular opening on the inside of the box. I placed the strips closely around the edge of the circle, making sure there were no gaps where the shaker elements could escape.

The foam also creates enough depth for the clay pieces, confetti and glitter to move freely.

4. Fill and close the shaker

Once the foam walls were in place, I added the shaker filling. I then cut a separate circle from Acetate and adhered it over the foam strips to seal the shaker from the back.

This creates a self-contained, completely clear shaker inside the milk carton: acetate on the front, the shaker elements in between and another layer of acetate on the back.

TIP

Want a solid shaker background instead? Simply replace the second acetate circle with cardstock. Choose a colour that coordinates with your patterned paper and shaker filling, and you’ll have a traditional shaker instead of a see-through window.

5. Finish the front

After sealing the shaker, I assembled the Milk Carton and finished the outside of the window with a white Stitched Scalloped Circle Frame. The frame hides the edge of the opening and gives the shaker a clean finish, while the little mouse layered over the frame becomes the focal point.

One practical tip: before permanently sealing and assembling the milk carton, give the shaker a good shake to make sure all the pieces move freely and check carefully that there are no gaps around the foam strips.
