Lawn Fawn’s Winter Release Week continues with the adorable new Big Hugs Penguin! This fun add-on works with Big Hugs Pop-Up to create an interactive penguin, but it can also be used on its own for even more creative possibilities.
For my card, I used the pop-up mechanism to create a playful little penguin who looks like he’s having lots of fun juggling snowballs!

About This Project
For the inside of my card, I combined the new Big Hugs Penguin with Big Hugs Pop-Up and turned him into a playful little penguin juggling snowballs. I positioned his feet so that he looks as though he’s sitting on top of the snowy hill, happily playing in the snow.
I die-cut the penguin and his wings from Moonstone Cardstock, then added some depth by ink blending Blue Jay, Forget-Me-Not and Moonstone Ink around the edges. His beak and feet were cut from Sunflower Cardstock and shaded with No. 2 Pencil Ink. For the background behind him, I used Kiddie Pool Ink, keeping the whole scene in the same soft blue colour palette.
Instead of using perfectly round circles for all of the snowballs, I went through my dies looking for some slightly irregular shapes. I found just what I needed in two rather unexpected places: the pea die from Be Hap-Pea Lawn Cuts and the cookie die from Milk and Cookies Lawn Cuts! Their different shapes and sizes make the snowballs look much more natural. I added Prisma Glitter to them for a frosty, sparkling finish.
To create the juggling effect, I attached two of the snowballs to narrow strips of acetate above the penguin’s wings and added two more above him inside the card. When the card opens and the Big Hugs Pop-Up mechanism lifts the penguin into position, the arrangement makes it look as though he’s tossing the snowballs through the air.
For the snowy background, I used the Stitched Snowflake Backdrop and added snowflakes cut from Pixie Dust Sparkle Cardstock with Magic Iris Snow Globe Add-On. I also added Prisma Glitter along the top of the snowy hillside and to the “Joy” in the Sending Joy for the Holidays sentiment to carry the snowy sparkle throughout the inside of the card..
I wanted the card front to give a little hint of the fun waiting inside, so I created another playful penguin scene using Toboggan Together. I coloured the penguins with the coordinating Toboggan Together Coloring Stencils, using inks that coordinate with the ink-blended Big Hugs Penguin inside the card. One penguin is busy throwing snowballs at his friend – and apparently his aim is pretty good, because one has already landed right on the other penguin’s head! The snowballs are from Snowball Fight, and I added a little Prisma Glitter to those as well.
For the background, I used the Stitched Snowflake Backdrop again, but this time I used it with an embossing mat in my die-cutting machine. Instead of cutting the snowflake design, this presses it into the white cardstock and creates a subtle debossed background. I love that it lets me use the same die in a completely different way while still tying the front of the card to the inside.
The large Giant Season’s Greetings sentiment is layered from dark blue cardstock over the new Sapphire Sparkle Cardstock, leaving just a little sparkle peeking out from behind. I finished the front with a few more Pixie Dust snowflakes and mounted everything onto patterned paper from the Stripes ’n Sprinkles Autumn Collection Pack.
