Lawn Fawn Fall Inspiration & Release Week – Happy Leaves Washi Tape Sending Big Hugs Card

Autumn card featuring Lawn Fawn Happy Leaves Washi Tape, Sending Big Hugs and colourful smiling leaves on a kraft background.

We’re continuing with the Lawn Fawn Fall Inspiration & Release Week, and this project features the new Happy Leaves Washi Tape. I normally use washi tape mostly for sealing or decorating envelopes, so I wanted to find a different way to make it part of the actual card design.

I kept this card fairly simple, but incorporated a few fun techniques along the way. The colourful washi tape became part of the large Sending Big Hugs sentiment, while a stencilled embossed background and some happy little leaves added extra texture and personality.

Let’s take a closer look!

About This Project

I started by adhering several strips of the new Happy Leaves Washi Tape onto white cardstock, making sure I covered a large enough area for the centre section of the Sending Big Hugs die. I then die cut the entire sentiment from this prepared piece, which gave the large “BIG” letters their colourful leaf pattern.

To add a little more contrast, I die cut the sentiment again from the new yellow paper from the Stripes ’n Sprinkles Autumn Petite Paper Pack and trimmed away everything except the word “Sending”. I did the same with red patterned paper for “Hugs”, carefully cutting the letters free from the rest of the die-cut piece. I then layered both words directly over the original washi-covered sentiment. This way, the colourful washi tape remains visible in the large centre letters, while “Sending” and “Hugs” stand out in their own coordinating colours.

Around the sentiment, I added several die-cut leaves in matching shades and gave them little faces for some extra personality. Lawn Fawn includes lots of tiny smiley faces throughout different die and stamp sets, so I simply picked a few from my stash that fit the leaves.

For the kraft background panel, I used a different way of adding texture. Instead of using an embossing folder, I embossed the cardstock with a stencil and an embossing mat in my die-cutting machine. Afterwards, I very lightly applied Yeti Ink through the stencil, making the woodgrain texture a little more visible without overpowering the background.

I like how this card uses only a few elements, but still combines several different techniques—and it was a fun way to use washi tape somewhere other than an envelope for a change.

Love how you made your card stand out, Jennifer. I like the idea of using washi this way, and using different papers on the other words. Very creative!

Love how you tied the colours of the washi into the card.
