Lawn Fawn July Inspiration Week – Thank You: Sweet Honey Jar Pull-Tab Card

INSERT HERO IMAGE HERE

I guess it’s no secret anymore—I absolutely love creating with the Build-A-Bee set! After yesterday’s project, I simply had to make another card featuring this adorable little bee. This time, she’s happily dipping her honey dipper into a jar of sparkly honey with a fun, interactive pull-tab design that brings the whole scene to life.

About This Project

The little bee is happily holding her honey dipper, dipping it into the jar of honey. As soon as you pull the tab, she flies up with a sweet little scoop of honey before returning to the jar when you push it back down again. Even though the movement looks quite impressive, it’s actually created with a very simple mechanism. I used the Let’s Toast Pull-Tab Add-On, which already includes everything you need to build it, making this interactive element surprisingly easy to put together.

To create a soft and cheerful look, I paired warm honey tones with delicate pink flowers and used the new Daisy Bloom Outline Background Stencils to add a subtle floral background without taking the focus away from the bee.

For the honey, I used Sparkle Cardstock – Yellow. To make it look a little more realistic, I softly blended No. 2 Pencil Ink over it. This tones down the bright yellow slightly, adds a bit of shading, and gives the honey a warmer, more natural look.

Tips & Tricks

Creating the Illusion of a Bee Dipping into the Honey

Sometimes it’s the smallest details that make the biggest difference. A little modification creates the illusion that the bee is actually dipping the honey dipper into the jar instead of simply moving behind it.

Step 1 – Create an Open Jar

I started with the Build-A-Drink Mason Jar dies. I die cut several of the jar outline pieces and stacked them together, just as I would when creating the walls of a shaker card. The important difference is that I trimmed away the entire upper opening from each outline before adhering the layers together.

This creates a raised frame with an open top, giving the honey dipper a place to enter the jar while still providing enough depth for the interactive mechanism to move freely.

Step 2 – Build the Layers

The secret is in the layering. For the demonstration photos, I die cut one jar outline from green cardstock and another from pink cardstock so that the different parts are easier to distinguish.

The green outline represents the back layer and remains completely intact. On the finished card, the stacked open frame from Step 1 is placed on top of this back layer.

The pink outline represents the front layer. I trimmed away its upper opening before adhering it over the stacked frame. The finished order is therefore: intact back layer, stacked open frame, and trimmed front layer.

On the finished card, both the front and back layers were cut from vellum. I only used coloured cardstock in these photos to make the construction easier to visualize. To keep the adhesive invisible through the vellum, I attached the layers using Double-Sided Adhesive Sheets, which create a much cleaner finish than applying liquid glue directly to the vellum.

Step 3 – Create the Finished Effect

Layering the pieces in this order allows the honey dipper to pass through the opening while the front edge of the jar remains visible. This creates the illusion that the bee is actually dipping the honey dipper into the jar instead of simply disappearing behind it.

As the pull tab moves, the bee dips the honey dipper into the honey and then flies back up with a little scoop. It is a very small alteration to the die cuts, but it adds much more depth and makes the interactive movement feel far more natural.
